2018 Tenuta di Trinoro Toscana IGT

2018 Tenuta di Trinoro Toscana IGT "Le Cupole"

Le Cupole is a great and very accessible Super-Tuscan from Tenuta di Trinoro, it is its little brother and it is composed by the same blend but the grapes are from younger vineyards grown in deeper soils.

Le Cupole was first produced in 1995. It is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, with percentages varying with each vintage. Fermented in stainless steel, aged in one to three year old barriques and blended in cement tanks, Le Cupole is velvety and approachable. This wine hits the palate with exuberance, full of fleshy, bright fruit, extracted tannins, and rich color.

Blend: 40% Cabernet Franc, 37% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This is a terrific wine that hits that proverbial sweet spot between excellence and value. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2018 Le Cupole is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 37% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot that sees a brief eight months in second and third-passage barrique followed by some additional resting time in cement. Production is an ample 70,000 bottles. This lovely vintage shows dark fruit intensity and richness with cherry, blackberry and plum. There is a touch of sweetness, but the mouthfeel is well constructed and layered with phenolic tightness and tight natural structure that will help it age 10 years or more. Le Cupole is one of the best values found in Tuscany.

Vinous

The 2018 Le Cupole is a delicious entry-level offering from Trinoro. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berry, mint and blood orange all run through the 2018. In this vintage, Le Cupole is a bit lighter than it often is. I would prefer to drink this fruity red over the next handful of years.

“Super Tuscan” is a term used to describe red wines from Tuscany that may include non-indigenous grapes, particularly MerlotCabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The creation of super Tuscan wines resulted from the frustration winemakers had towards a slow bureaucracy in changing Italy’s wine law during the 1970s. Winemakers began mixing ‘unsanctioned’ wine varieties (like Merlot) into their blends to make high-quality wines. The legal system eventually yielded in 1992 with the creation of IGT, a new designation that gave winemakers the ability to be more creative.
