- 2013 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 93 points
The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits a nicely balanced presentation with dark fruit layers that are embellished by well-managed oak spice and savory smoke. This vintage is particularly elegant and tight, with streamlined intensity that builds slowly in the glass as the wine takes on more volume and general breathing space. The finish is long, silky and should well endure the test of time.

Wine Spectator 92 points
A supple texture and round profile wraps around the cherry, leather and spice flavors here. Firms up, turning more chewy by the finish, exhibiting a salty, minerally finish. Best from 2021 through 2035.

James Suckling 91 points
Quite classically styled with leather and cedary aromas alongside dried cherries. The palate has bright acidity and poached red-cherry flavors hold long, smooth and even. You can drink now or hold for a more savory style and try around 2021.

Wine Enthusiast 91points
Underbrush, dark kitchen spice and woodland berry aromas lead the nose. The solid palate offers Marasca cherry, prune and ground clove alongside firm tannins. Drink 2021–2028.

Wine & Spirits 90points

Firm, leathery tannins frame this wine’s flavors of sour cherry, sarsaparilla, fennel and sweet spice. It’s a solid choice for a steakhouse list.

- 2014 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92 points
Fattoria dei Barbi's 2014 Brunello di Montalcino marks an impressive effort in what was undoubtedly a difficult vintage. The experienced winemaking team at this historic estate has evidently made specific choices to uphold the quality of their Brunelllo despite the challenges of this wet and cold growing season. For example, careful green harvesting proved essential for even ripening of the clusters. The fruit here does appear evenly mature and there is enough succulent flavor intensity (with dark fruit, tobacco and cured spice) and texture to count on a healthy aging trajectory as we move forward in time. However, this vintage is fundamentally near and medium term, so I would recommend a 10- or 15-year drinking window. It also tastes great straight out of the gate.

Wine Enthusiast 91points
Forest floor, camphor, new leather and pressed rose aromas emerge on this racy red. The focused, linear palate offers red cherry, licorice, wild herb and black tea framed in taut refined tannins and firm acidity. Give this a few more years to unwind and fully develop. Drink 2021–2034.

James Suckling 90points

Aromas of plums and dried berries with hints of flowers and sweet tobacco. Medium body, redcurrant and berry flavors and a medium finish.

James Suckling 96 points
Ripe plum and cherry aromas with dried flowers and spices. Some lavender and cedar, too. Full bodied, tight and chewy. Needs time to soften and come together. Better after 2022.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 94 points
The Fattoria dei Barbi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a extremely polished and precise expression that hits all the right buttons for those seeking a classic expression of Sangiovese. In appearance, the wine shows a bright ruby hue with brilliant garnet reflections. The bouquet is tempered and shy at first, but it opens quickly to reveal those characteristic aromas of wild berry, candied cherry, licorice and pressed blue flowers that are so beautifully tied to this mighty Tuscan grape. Some 149,000 bottles were released in January 2020.

Wine Spectator 92 points

Plum, cherry, iron, earth and salty notes mark this vibrant red. Lean and sinewy, with firm, dusty tannins plying the finish. This comes together well overall, delivering a solid core of ripe fruit. Best from 2023 through 2040.

Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Menthol, blue-flower and tilled soil aromas emerge from the glass along with a whiff of dried tobacco leaf. The full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, vanilla and clove before finishing on a note of powdered sage. Close-grained tannins grip the close. Drink 2023–2030
