2000 Gaja Ca'Marcanda Magari Toscana IGT

Angelo Gaja, the undisputed king of Barbaresco, has a secret passion. It’s for his new estate in Bolgheri off the coast of Tuscany south of Livorno. In this up-and-coming area best known for the legendary Sassicaia, where tradition doesn’t dictate a thing, Gaja has built Ca’ Marcanda, his modern state-of-the-art winery. The 2000 Ca’ Marcanda Magari is a blend of 50% Merlot with 25% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Luscious and full-bodied, this first release has an intricate nose of spice, coffee and dark berries. Layers of ripe, concentrated fruit are balanced with ripe round tannins and a finish that just won’t quit. A brilliant debut from this consummate perfectionist.

Ca'Marcanda Magari is a red wine produced by the Tuscan operations of the Gaja winery, which is world-renowned for its Barbaresco wines from the namesake town in the Piedmont region of Italy. The Gaja family is known for their innovation and dedication to producing wines of exceptional quality. Angelo Gaja, in particular, is a prominent figure in the wine industry and has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Italian wines on the global stage. "Ca'Marcanda" refers to the name of the estate where the grapes for this wine are grown, in the Tuscan Maremma region known for the Bolgheri wines. "Magari" translates to "if only" or "if it were only true" in Italian, expressing a sense of longing or aspiration, with perhaps a touch of irony. This wine is a blend of different grape varieties, in a super-Tuscan style, made with 50% Merlot, 25% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Francgrapes. The harvest of 2000 was the debut vintage of Gaja Ca'Marcanda Magari when it was first released in 2003, and the Wine Advocate currently (September 2023) reports the 2000 vintage for Bolgheri wines as "Outstanding. Ready to drink." Thus, a wine to collect for value, or to enjoy at its peak in the mid to late 2020's. This lot of 6 bottles was acquired in Italy and directly imported by us at Delfino Fine Wines, then maintained in our professional cellar.
