Gattinara is produced in the Gattinara wine region, located in the northern part of Piedmont. Like Barolo, Gattinara is primarily composed of Nebbiolo grapes, but it tends to be more approachable and softer in comparison. Gattinara exhibits a garnet hue with orange reflections, showcasing a delicate and aromatic profile with notes of dried flowers, cherry, and earthy undertones. The aging process for Gattinara involves time in oak barrels, contributing to refined tannins. While Gattinara shares some characteristics with Barolo, it is generally considered to be more accessible at a younger age.

The name Gattinara likely derives from "Catuli Ara," meaning the altar of Catullus. In fact, it seems that the city of Gattinara arose in the place where Proconsul Lutatius Catulus sacrificed the spoils of war from the defeated Cimbri in the surrounding area in 101 B.C. Recent archaeological findings attest that wine has been produced in this area since Roman times. The Marquis of Gattinara, Cardinal Mercurino Arborio, Chancellor of Charles V and lover of the wine from his lands, dared to present this wine at the Court of the King of Spain. The wine of Gattinara, in fact, is linked to this famous diplomat, an enthusiastic admirer and tireless taster, who spread its fame by offering it as an effective means of diplomatic negotiation.
